Morning stiffness is one of the most common symptoms in fibromyalgia patients. In fact, it is estimated that more than 70 percent of them are suffering from fibromyalgia morning stiffness on a regular basis. Additionally, half of these patients suffer from chronic morning soreness and muscle stiffness that can last for several hours up to a day. This will surely have a huge impact on one’s daily activities. It can affect one’s ability to stand, sit and even rest.

Where Does Stiffness Usually Occur

Fibromyalgia morning stiffness will usually occur in the joints, muscles, tendons, as well as in the ligaments all over the body. It can be felt in any of the connective tissues. There are several theories that exist as to why fibromyalgia patients have morning stiffness. Similar to inflammatory arthritis, the stiffness can be due to the following:

  • Lack of activity or exercise.
  • Accumulation of fluid around the joints.
  • Overuse of certain muscles.
  • Stress due to the improper movement of the limbs.

How to Relieve Fibromyalgia Morning Stiffness

Morning stiffness can take its toll on fibro sufferers. This is especially true if you’re already suffering from other severe symptoms. If you have stiffness on your joint and muscles, going to work can become difficult. In fact, even driving a car or getting out of bed can be such a pain. Here are some ways to get relieve from morning stiffness:

  • Avoid sleeping in the cold as it can stiffen your body. Adjust your air conditioner when necessary
  • Cultivate good sleeping posture such as lying on your back or your side. Bad sleeping postures can cause aches and stiffness. It could help if you use a good pillow.
  • Soaking in a nice hot bath or taking a hot shower. This can better blood circulation, induce relaxation and relieve muscle spasms.
  • Do some easy stretching on your bed. It can help to promote blood circulation and loosen your muscles. You will find it easier to stretch after a hot bath or shower
